Registration for a Hospital Birth
Expectant mothers living in Vienna who want to give birth in a hospital that accepts public insurance have to register online at: https://geburtsinfo.wien/. Up to three hospital preferences can be expressed. It is advisable to register as early as possible but not before receiving the bright yellow mother-child booklet (Mutter-Kind Pass) from your gynecologist.
If you choose to give birth in a private hospital, you should register directly with the establishment of your choice as early as possible.
Pregnancy and Employment
Employed expectant mothers have to inform their employers about their pregnancy immediately after it has been confirmed and provide written medical confirmation (Schwangerschaftsbestätigung).
A minimum of four weeks before your maternity leave (Mutterschutz) begins, you should get a second written confirmation of your pregnancy and due date; this must also be handed to your employer so your final date of work can be calculated.
A written salary confirmation letter, a doctor’s notice with the expectant due date, and a copy of the Mutter-Kind Pass have to be submitted to the mother’s health insurer. The submission can be made either by the employer or by the employee.
