Medical care during pregnancy in Austria is usually overseen by your gynecologist (Frauenarzt).
There are five mandatory examinations during pregnancy and five mandatory examinations after birth. The results of these examinations are recorded in the mother-child booklet (Mutter-Kind Pass). All of the examinations have to be completed in the required timeframe. If you have any of the examinations outside of Austria, remember to ask your doctor to complete the paperwork and have it translated to German.
During the pregnancy, three ultrasounds will be covered by public health insurance. Prenatal screening (12-14th week), organ screening (20-24th week) and wellbeing screening (30-34th week) are not covered by public insurance unless there is a medical reason for them.
