Special needs education in Austria is provided either through integrated education or in specialized schools.
- Integrated teaching and integrated education provide children with and without special needs the opportunity to receive a shared learning experience. Pupils with special educational needs can receive integrated teaching in the different levels of the Austrian education system.
- Special schools encompass nine school years, with students joining at the age of six. The final year is the pre-vocational year. With the approval of the school authority and with the consent of the body operating the school, the special school may be attended for up to twelve years.
